E-Bike Accessories

Regarding e-biking, having the right accessories can make all the difference in comfort, safety, and convenience. Here are some recommended e-bike accessories to consider:

Reflective Jacket:

A reflective jacket that works in both daylight and nighttime is critical for safe cycling.

Rear Bike Rack:

A rear bike rack is a must-have accessory for any e-bike. It can carry groceries, bags, or even a child carrier. With a rear bike rack, you can expand the capacity of your e-bike and make it more versatile. [[2]]  Gazelle e-bikes come with a sturdy rear bike rack and strap for attaching boxes or bags.

E-Bike Lights:

Proper lighting is essential for safety when riding at night or in low-light conditions. E-bike lights are specifically designed for electric bikes and can be easily installed. Look for lights with high lumens and long battery life. [[1]]

Fenders are great accessories to protect your clothing and bike from getting dirty or wet in rainy or muddy conditions. They can also help improve visibility by deflecting water or mud away from the rider. [[3]]

Investing in a good lock is crucial for protecting your e-bike from theft. Look for a sturdy lock for e-bikes, such as a heavy-duty U-lock. [[3]].  Cafe Locks, can be very useful for a quick stop AND for making it even harder to steal when combined with U-Locks or other technologies like alarms.  My Gazelle e-bike comes equipped with a Cafe lock built in , though add-ons are also available.

Comfortable Saddle:

A comfortable saddle can make a big difference in your overall e-biking experience. Look for a saddle with sufficient padding and support, and consider getting one with a cut-out design to reduce pressure on sensitive areas. [[1]]

Mirrors can help improve your visibility and awareness of your surroundings while riding. Consider getting a rearview mirror that can be easily attached to your handlebars. [[3]]

Panniers and Bike Bags:

Panniers and bike bags are great for carrying cargo, such as groceries or work supplies, while e-biking. Look for options with waterproof or water-resistant materials to protect your items. [[1]]

Bell or Horn:

Having a bell or horn is important for alerting pedestrians and other cyclists of your presence, especially when riding on shared paths or trails. Look for a bell or horn with a loud, clear sound. [[3]]

Phone Mount:

A phone mount can be a convenient accessory for using GPS or tracking your ride while e-biking. Look for a mount compatible with your phone model that easily attaches to your handlebars. [[1]]

First Aid Kit:

While it’s not an accessory specific to e-biking, carrying a first aid kit is always a good idea when engaging in outdoor activities. Pack basic supplies like bandages, antiseptic wipes, and pain relievers in a small, portable kit. [[3]]

Bike Griptape:

To increase comfort and safety, particularly with older bikes, consider adding new grip tape.

Bike Pedals:

Bike Pedals, can be upgraded to include lights, which enhance safety by making you more visible.  I love the pedals on my Montague bike that lightup when the pedals are in motion.

Spoke Reflectors

A simple and cheap way to increase your visibility is to add Spoke Reflectors – inexpensive and easily installed.  Visibility is critical if you ride at night or live in a northern region where it gets dark early in the winter.  Here in Massachusetts, sunset is about 4:15 pm in December, so a must-have if you want to “Pedal Bright”

Here are a few bike tools that could be part of your e-bike accessory kit:

    1. Wrenches: Every tool kit should have a wrench that fits the hub nuts. Bringing a variety of Allen wrenches is also a smart idea. [[1]]
    2. Multi-tool: A multi-tool, like a Swiss army knife or something similar, will also be useful for various e-bike repair jobs. Look for a tool that includes a variety of Allen wrenches, screwdrivers, and other common tools. [[1]]
    3. Tire repair kit: A flat tire is a common issue with any bike, so it’s important to have a tire repair kit in your e-bike tool kit. Look for a kit with tire levers, patches, and a pump. [[2]]
    4. While I carry a tire repair kit and spare inner tube, sometimes it isn’t easy to find the cause while on the road.  This touring kit can help patch you up enough to get home and be a backup if you get a second flat.
    5. Chain tool: A chain tool is a must-have for any e-bike repair kit, as it can help repair and replace a broken chain. Look for a tool that is compatible with your e-bike’s chain. [[3]]
    6. Duct tape: Adhesives like duct tape are also important for quick emergency fixes. [[1]]

Bike Rack

Transporting an electric bike in a car is the most common and convenient way to take your bike on a road trip or a vacation. Here are some tips to ensure that your electric bike is transported safely:

  1. Use a bike rack: Invest in a good quality bike rack that securely holds your electric bike on your car’s roof or back.
  2. Protect the bike: Use padding or bubble wrap to protect the bike’s frame, wheels, and battery during transit.
  3. Secure the bike: Use bungee cords or straps to secure the bike to the rack and prevent it from swaying or falling during the journey.
  4. Consider getting a rack with a ramp, allowing you to roll the bike up to the rack rather than lifting it.

A good example is the Thule EasyFold XT 2 Hitch Bike Rack

These are just a few examples of recommended e-bike accessories to consider. Depending on your individual needs and preferences, other accessories may make your e-biking experience even better. [[1][2][3]] Regardless of your choice of ebike – a step-through city commuter, a mountain bike or electric tricycle or even a semi recumbent trike, having the proper accessories is a great way to improve your ride.

To summarize, some recommended e-bike accessories include a rear bike rack, e-bike lights, fenders, locks, a comfortable saddle, mirrors, panniers and bike bags, a bell or horn, a phone mount, and a first aid kit. By investing in these accessories, you can enhance the safety, comfort, and convenience of your e-biking experience.
