Comprehensive Electric Bike Maintenance Guide
Regular maintenance is critical for a safe and adequately functioning ebike. Here are weekly and monthly Electric Bike Maintenance Checklists and the tooling needed to perform the maintenance.
This checklist is based on Lennard Zinn‘s work and my experience using his guidance for my electric bikes over the last 12 years. My wife and I currently own a pair of Gazelle e-bikes. Regardless of the type of bike you own, having regular bicycle checks will ensure your ride is always ready to go. Please send any feedback, or additional ideas to me at carlw@pedalbright.com.
Weekly Electric Bike Maintenance Checklist:
- Check tire pressure and inflate tires as needed. Use a reliable tire pressure gauge to check the pressure of both tires and inflate them to the recommended pressure level (usually around 40-50 PSI) using a hand pump or air compressor. Make sure the valves are tight and not leaking.
- Check brakes and adjust or tighten them as needed. Test the brakes by squeezing the brake lever; if the brake pads are worn or not making contact with the rim, it’s time to adjust or replace them. Check the brake pads, rotor, and lever for wear or damage. Also, check that the brake cable is properly adjusted and lubricated. If the brakes are squeaking, here is how to identify and fix the cause.
- Check the battery level and charge it if necessary. Use the bike’s built-in battery indicator or a multimeter to check the battery’s charge level. If the battery is low, charge it to full capacity.
- Check the tightness of all bolts and screws. Use a torque wrench to check all bolts and screws’ tightness, especially those holding the handlebars, seat post, and stem. Make sure they are tightened to the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Check the condition of the chain and lubricate it if necessary. Use a chain checker tool to check the chain’s wear; if it’s stretched, it’s time to replace it. Clean the chain using a degreaser and lubricate it with a lubricant specifically designed for bike chains.
Tools needed for Weekly Electric Bike Maintenance:
- Here are the tools I have found helpful – please suggest others in the comments.
- Jaco Flowpro Tire pressure gauge
- Hand pump or Jaco Smartflow air compressor
- EP 1/2 in Torque wrench
- ParkTool Chain checker tool
- A bike chain tool
- Muc Off Dry Lubricant specifically designed for bike chains
- A REMA patch kit – this small addition will get you home.
Monthly Electric Bike Maintenance Checklist:
- Clean the bike frame and components with a damp cloth. Use a mild detergent and a soft brush to clean the frame and other components of the bike. Be sure to remove any dirt or grime that may have accumulated.
- Check the tightness of all bolts and screws. Use a torque wrench to check all bolts and screws’ tightness, especially those holding the handlebars, seat post, and stem. Make sure they are tightened to the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Check the condition of the brake pads and replace them if necessary. Use a ruler or brake pad wear indicator to measure the thickness of the brake pads; if they have worn down to less than 1mm, it’s time to replace them. Make sure to use pads that the manufacturer specifies.
- Check the condition of the tires and replace if necessary. Use a tire tread depth gauge to check the tread depth of the tires, if they have worn down to less than 1mm, it’s time to replace them. Also, check for any cuts, bulges, or other damage on the tire sidewall.
- Check the condition of the chain and lubricate if necessary. Use a chain checker tool to check the chain’s wear, if it’s stretched, it’s time to replace it. Clean the chain using a degreaser and lubricate it with a lubricant specifically designed for bike chains.
- Check the function of all lights and replace batteries if necessary. Test the headlight and taillight to ensure they function correctly, and replace the batteries if necessary.
- Check the condition of the battery and replace if necessary. Check the battery’s capacity and overall condition, if the capacity is low or the battery shows signs of damage, it’s time to replace it. Look for physical damage, including cracks in the casing. Avoid extreme heat and extreme cold storage.
- Test ride the bike to ensure proper functioning. Take the bike for a short test ride to ensure everything works properly and check for unusual noises or vibrations.

Note 1: It’s essential to have all these tools on hand, but please also check the bike’s manual, as some e-bikes might require different specific tools and specifications. Also, don’t hesitate to ask for help to a professional bike mechanic if you’re not confident in performing the maintenance yourself.
Also, Lennard Zinn is the go-to author for Road Bike and Mountain Bike maintenance – while not specific to electric bikes, his books are a handy reference for fixing most things that go wrong. For the electric bits, I recommend going to your local bike shop.
Note 1: It’s also essential to keep the bike dry, protect it from extreme temperatures and weather conditions, and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for maintenance. Always use the proper tools and wear safety gear when riding your bike.
Many bike shops have free maintenance classes, so check out your local bike shop.
